The Principle of Exchange

“Wherever he steps, whatever he touches, whatever he leaves, even unconsciously, will serve as a silent witness against him. Not only his fingerprints or his footprints, but his hair, the fibers from his clothes, the glass he breaks, the tool mark he leaves, the paint he scratches, the blood or semen he deposits or collects. All of these and more, bear mute witness against him. This is evidence that does not forget. It is not confused by the excitement of the moment. It is not absent because human witnesses are. It is factual evidence. Physical evidence cannot be wrong, it cannot perjure itself, it cannot be wholly absent. Only human failure to find it, study and understand it, can diminish its value.”
                                                                                     Dr. Edmond Locard
While listening to a Podcast, Atlanta Monster, which is a thorough investigation into the abduction and subsequent killing of over 25 Atlanta children, the hysteria surrounding the murders, and the arrest of Wayne Williams and his alleged guilt in the slayings. I came across a principle that resonated with me in an unexpected way. Before I get into that, I’d like to say a little more about this podcast. This story is intriguing due to the fact that Wayne Williams is serving a life sentence for the murder of two adult males, but he was never charged or convicted for any of the child murders he is accused of committing. This crime podcast wasn’t my typical listen but it righteously had me hooked from the first episode. Payne Lindsey conducts some incredible, both chilling and insightful interviews. It is impressive to me how the production, through sound, creates such a vivid picture. As I listened to each episode I found myself hoping for some exacting piece of evidence that would point out the guilty or innocent person or persons leaving no shadow of a doubt but for me it never came. If you haven’t checked out this podcast and are in search of something different I would definitely recommend this one. In many ways it is yet another eye opener as to how callous and evil the world can be and how the undeniably tainted weaving of our social fabric in America can cause us to be so unsure of so much. In listening to this podcast I realized that there’s a mistrust that is so deeply ingrained that even what should make since sometimes doesn’t and where 2+2 usually = 4 it sometimes seems it can’t. So if you get the chance check this podcast out and be sure to come back and let me know what you think about it.

Now on to what I really wanted to write about. In one of the episodes of Atlanta Monster the “The Exchange Principle” (the above quote pretty much sums it up). I, as I often do, listened to these words and took them to be so much deeper than what they appear to convey on the surface. I had an immediate “Aha” moment upon hearing them. Although, Dr. Locard made this statement in reference to the transfer of physical evidence, but I truly believe the exchange principle holds true in every medium of life. As we go on our day to day journeys everything we come in contact with in mind, body and spirit leaves a trace or more. Not only is something taken by us, but we are also leaving something in our trail whether it be positive or negative. I believe it is important that we recognize this and become more aware of what we allow ourselves to come into contact with. As  we are highly aware of this fact when it comes to the physical, we should know that this truth is even stronger in its spiritual and mental aspects. The type of people, things, thoughts and vibes we allow ourselves to commune with undoubtedly leave some kind of trace whether it be positive or negative. Most importantly we will leave something behind whether it be positive or negative. In knowing this, I am trying to be better about doing what needs to be done to ensure that I am in contact with those things, thoughts and people that are a catalyst for the growth of peace, love and productivity and when I am not I hope to win the battle of the transfer by imparting more love, understanding, and positivity. If over the course of the day I begin to feel like everything is against me or I feel like everybody else is tripping and needs to get on my level. I take a moment to check myself and make sure I am not the one who is in fact imparting misery upon myself and every other living thing and environment I come in contact with.

Til next time……. BE
